Summary
The Lead Veterinary Technician at Tails Humane Society supports their high-volume spay/neuter clinic by assisting the veterinarian with surgical procedures, ensuring animal safety and well-being, managing surgical flow, and maintaining clinic operations.

Job responsibilities

Assist the veterinarian in setting up surgical procedures, maintaining a smooth flow of patients, and adhering to safety protocols while ensuring treatment areas are kept clean and organized.

Efficiently pre-medicate, induce anesthesia, intubate animals, and prepare all patients for surgery, ensuring their safety throughout the process.

Administer medications, vaccinations, and assist with maintaining accurate clinical records in the shelter database.

Handle 35-55 animals per day (dogs and cats), ensuring their comfort and safety during procedures.

Assist with the intake and release of patients, delivering post-operative care instructions clearly and professionally.

Recognize and address animal behavior issues (e.g., aggressive or fearful behavior, fractious/feral cats) using appropriate safety equipment and techniques.

Assist with cleaning the clinic, prepare surgical packs, and ensure necessary equipment is sanitized and ready for use.

Work independently and collaboratively within the veterinary team, providing essential care and support to animals.

Take inventory, prepare weekly clinic supply orders, and ensure the clinic is properly stocked.

Assist with euthanasia procedures when necessary, with compassion and professionalism.

Qualifications

CVT status or equivalent experience required.

Minimum of one year of experience as a veterinary technician in a clinic environment; shelter clinic experience is a plus.

Experience with animal handling, restraint, and behavior assessments, as well as administering intravenous injections and intubating animals for surgery.

Experience in anesthesia and surgery is required

Positive attitude and professional demeanor

Self-motivated, with the ability to challenge physical and mental capabilities and recognize personal limitations.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage fluctuating priorities and multiple tasks.

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Work Conditions

Primarily works in a high-volume surgery environment, requiring the ability to manage multiple procedures and a fast-paced setting.

Frequent exposure to high noise levels, industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, and animal waste.

Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, bites, and scratches from animals.

Safety procedures must be strictly always adhered to ensure personal and animal safety.

Requires working as a key member of the surgical team, contributing to the overall flow and success of the procedures.
