Willow Rock Pet Hospital is looking for a full-time Lead Veterinary Technician to join our team. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude that is detail oriented and committed to quality work.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The veterinary technician is the veterinarian’s primary medical support. They aid the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Must have 1-3 years working in a veterinary practice setting.
Registered Veterinary Technician Certification required.
Surgical assistant, anesthetic monitoring, dental prophylaxis, dental radiograph, and dental extraction experience required.
Possesses leadership skills, active listening, critical thinking, complex problem solving, time management, and decision-making skills.
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 18 years old.
Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.
Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
Is well-spoken and approaches his/her job duties in a mature nature.
Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.
Has excellent client communication skills.
Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs.). Walks or stands for extended periods of time; frequently works in a bent position.
May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
WAGE RANGE
Willow Rock Pet Hospital offers competitive wages based on level of experience. Benefits are outlined in the employee manual and are separate from the hourly wage.

Is able to accurately and safely administer subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous injections.
Can handle client’s medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.
Can prepare estimates for procedures and discuss financial commitments with clients supporting hospital financial policies.
Can explain necessary follow-up and at-home instructions.
Understands usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription medications and can readily explain them to clients.
Can maintain an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
Can assist the veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
Can properly care for all surgical materials; keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
Can perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
Can perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
Can effectively position for and take radiographs.
Can perform electrocardiograms.
Can place IV catheters and properly care for them; understands the use and care of IV pumps.
Knows common disease states and can alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with patients.
Can prepare a patient and the machine for an ultrasound procedure.
Can admit patients following hospital policy and doctors written or verbal orders.
Can discharge patients based on the veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The purpose of this position is to supervise, direct, plan, coordinate and perform a variety of duties concerned with animal health and client education at Willow Rock Pet Hospital. The lead technician’s job is to assure that our patients are getting the highest level of care and to promote greater efficiency by relieving veterinarians of technical work and administrative detail.
A majority of your time should be spent doing technician duties. While you are performing these duties, you also should be observing and evaluating other technicians and assistants to guide and assist them. Remember you are setting an example for all other technicians. Delegate any technical tasks that can be handled by others and tend to take time away from your management duties.
The remainder of your time should be devoted to management duties. These include special projects, implementation of new ideas and/or procedures and employee management. Prioritize your projects and complete them in the order of greatest importance. Focusing all your attention on one or two projects at a time will help reduce your stress level and ensure greater accuracy in your work.
Lead RVT Responsibilities Include but not limited to:
Direct/assist technicians in their performance of a variety of technical and client education duties that facilitate the work of the practitioners, and the veterinary practice and office manager who directly or indirectly provide patient care.
Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA. Ensure that the hospital and its employees are in compliance with regulations. Inform the veterinary practice manager of any regulatory issues.
Make recommendations to the veterinary practice and office manager concerning personnel matters. Discuss disciplinary actions needed with the veterinary practice and office manager and assist with follow through. Resolve informal employee complaints; 3 provide a general explanation of the nature and basis for hospital personnel policies and procedures. Maintain effective employee–‐management communication.
Maintain controlled drug log and ensure the clinic is compliant with state and federal regulations.
Oversee completion of daily checklists and weekly maintenance logs for technicians and assistants.
Provide input on employees and perform evaluations of technicians and assistants.
Mediate any interpersonal problems, with guidance from the medical director and practice manager for larger issues.
Meet regularly with the practice manager and medical director to discuss any problems
Give prompt attention to requests for meetings, repair and supplies.
Direct on-the-job training of technical staff.
Ensures that calls relating to pet care as directed from the front office are completed. Educate clients and technical staff regarding policies where required.
Prepare/oversee the preparation of technical staff work schedule to adequately fulfill our client and patient needs.
Be fair and impartial to each employee.
Ensures that the technical staff continues to work in an efficient and well-organized manner.
