Landscape Technician

Position Status: Full Time
Working Hours: 40.00 hours/week, Monday–Friday 6:30am–3:00pm, Day shift
Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff and manages a wide range of operations across New Jersey. This position involves leading, guiding, instructing, and training grounds group leaders and grounds workers in the maintenance, landscaping, and grounds duties for campus facilities and university multipurpose areas. The candidate may perform any duties of the group as required.
Responsibilities
- Lead, guide, instruct and train lower level employees; perform independent work in the care and maintenance of grounds, including mowing, trimming, edging, trash and leaf removal, recycling, weeding, fertilizing, liming, pruning, mulching, dead‑heading, and watering.
- Identify and treat pest infestations in the maintenance of grounds.
- Instruct, train, and oversee grounds workers and other employees in landscaping standards and processes.
- Perform installation and renovation of landscape additions, including trees, shrubs, flowers, retaining walls, walkways, patios, and planters.
- Perform topsoil installation, rough and fine grading, and establishment of lawn from seed and sod; conduct aeration, slice seeding, topdressing, and identify insect, weed and disease infestations in specific turf grass areas.
- Operate power equipment such as slice seeder, aerator, rototiller, tractors, lawn mowers, trimmers, topdressors, and spray equipment.
- As assigned, perform snow removal duties using shovels, snow blowers, and snow vehicles/plows.
- Perform storm water maintenance.
- Perform related duties as required.
Salary & Offer
Grade: 16
Minimum Salary: $44,620.27 Mid‑Range Salary: $52,491.67 Maximum Salary: $60,542.26
The final salary offer may be determined by factors including qualifications, experience, and departmental funding.

Qualifications
Minimum
Education and Experience:
High school/vocational school education or equivalent plus three years of landscape work experience, including operation of heavy equipment and all aspects of maintenance and installation of landscape; or one year college‑level agriculture courses plus two years of landscape experience, including operation of heavy equipment.
Certifications & Licenses
- Valid driver’s license with two years driving experience and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with airbrake endorsement and a NJ Pesticide Applicator License Category 3B within 90 days of employment.
- Certification in a recognized landscape technician program within one year of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to read, write and speak English and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating power equipment such as slice seeder, aerator, rototiller, tractors, lawn mowers, trimmers, topdressors, and spray equipment.
- Experience performing snow removal duties using shovels, snow blowers, and snow vehicles/plows.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

- This position requires drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal law.
- Safe driving record required.
Immunization Requirements
