Overview
Under general supervision, will perform routine labor and maintenance work in the City of East Chicago greenhouse and related planting areas around the community. Assists with planting, watering, maintaining, and caring for flowers, plants, and landscaped areas to support City beautification efforts.
Responsibilities
- Plant, water, weed, and maintain flowers, shrubs, and other vegetation in the greenhouse and throughout City properties
- Assist with preparing soil, planting beds, and seasonal planting activities
- Perform basic greenhouse tasks, including watering, cleaning, and monitoring plant health
- Remove debris, weeds, and litter from garden beds and landscaped areas
- Assist with basic pruning, mulching, and general plant care
- Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and work areas
- Assist with setup and support for City events involving plants or landscaping
- Follow all safety procedures when using tools, equipment, and chemicals
- Operate City vehicles and equipment as assigned
- Provide general assistance to other City departments related to planting and landscaping
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of gardening or landscaping practices preferred
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
- Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to use basic hand tools and equipment safely
- Ability to interact with the public in a courteous manner
- Reliable attendance and ability to meet work schedules
Education and Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Prior experience in landscaping, gardening, or general labor is a plus but not required
Licenses or Certifications Required
- A valid State of Indiana Driver’s license is required.

Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily outdoors and in a greenhouse setting. The employee is regularly exposed to varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and seasonal temperature changes. Work may involve exposure to dirt, dust, plants, and standard landscaping materials.
Physical Demands:
This position requires regular physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. The employee must be able to use their hands and arms to handle tools, equipment, and plants. Tasks may involve pushing, pulling, and carrying materials. The employee must be able to:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work outdoors for extended periods
Vision and Hearing:
- Vision sufficient to perform job duties safely, with or without correction
- Hearing sufficient to understand verbal instructions, with or without correction
