Responsibilities
- The Laboratory Animal or Cagewash Technician Assistant performs routine husbandry services in animal housing rooms containing various species of laboratory animals.
- Provides general and technical assistance to supervisors, investigators, animal health, and veterinary staff.
- Supports Vivarium common service areas such as cagewash room, waste/trash removal, and sterile supply.
- May require physical exertion as part of assignments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Integral member of the research team, understanding the importance of individual responsibility for research integrity.
- Awareness of federal and state regulations and use of Standard Operating Procedures.
- Performs all needed husbandry services for one or more species, ensuring standards and conditions are met.
- Evaluates overall well‑being of animals by daily observation for signs of ill health or abnormalities.
- Applies knowledge of disease transmission, biosecurity, sanitation, and sterilization to prevent disease spread.
- Follows instructions in posted SOPs and executes deviations related to animal health, biosecurity, cage sanitation, or veterinary care.
- Maintains records including animal and supply inventories, room or cagewash logs, and special charges; prepares special reports as requested.
- Determines sex of common laboratory animals and other animal-specific needs.
- Inspects and evaluates caging, equipment, and physical plant for safety and animal well‑being; reports and ensures resolution of problems.
- Adheres to attendance, personal hygiene, and institutional policies regarding hazardous substances and equipment use.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience
- High school diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General experience with animals in a work or research environment preferred.
