Job summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and governance-focused Head of Drug Prescription Management Services to lead and optimize prescription practices across our healthcare facilities. The role is responsible for ensuring rational drug use, clinical governance, patient safety, cost efficiency, and regulatory compliance in all prescribing activities.
This position plays a critical role in improving treatment outcomes, reducing medication errors, and managing pharmaceutical costs while aligning with national and international best practices.
Responsibilities:
Prescription Governance & Clinical Oversight
• Develop, implement, and enforce standardized prescription policies and guidelines.
• Ensure rational drug use in line with clinical protocols and evidence-based medicine.
• Review prescription patterns to identify variances, risks, and opportunities for optimization.
Patient Safety & Quality Assurance
• Monitor and reduce medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and inappropriate prescribing.
• Lead medication safety audits and clinical reviews.
• Collaborate with clinicians to improve prescribing accuracy and outcomes.
Cost Control & Utilization Management
• Optimize drug utilization to reduce wastage and unnecessary costs.
• Support formulary management and cost-effective prescribing.
• Work with finance and pharmacy teams to monitor prescription-related spend.
Regulatory & Compliance Management
• Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies (PCN, MDCN, NAFDAC where applicable).
• Align prescription management practices with hospital accreditation and clinical governance standards.
• Support audits and inspections related to medication management.
Data, Reporting & Technology
• Leverage prescription data and EMR systems to track trends and performance.
• Produce regular reports on prescribing patterns, compliance, and outcomes.
• Support digital prescription systems and clinical decision-support tools.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Training
• Work closely with doctors, pharmacists, nurses, HMOs, and management teams.
• Lead continuous medical education (CME) sessions on rational prescribing and drug safety.
• Manage prescription-related relationships with pharmacy services and partners.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBBS) or Pharmacy (B.Pharm / PharmD) (mandatory).
• Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Pharmacology, Public Health, Health Management, or related field is an advantage.
• 8–12 years of experience in clinical practice, pharmacy management, or medication governance.
• Strong understanding of drug utilization review, formulary management, and medication safety.
• Experience working in hospital systems, HMOs, or integrated healthcare networks.
• Excellent analytical, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
