Position Overview
The Central Animal Facility at the University of Bern (Switzerland) is the largest facility within the Experimental Animal Center (EAC). It specializes in breeding and housing small rodents and rabbits, supporting biomedical research with a focus on the 3
Rs principles (Reduce, Refine, Replace), a culture of care, and strict compliance with regulations.
Position Details: 100% position, 2-year contract (renewable).
Responsibilities
Oversee operations, finances, and personnel of the Central Animal Facility.
Provide veterinary clinical, surgical, and medical care to the animal population.
Supervise hygiene and monitoring programs.
Manage animal stock using the database system.
Participate in emergency, weekend, and holiday care.
Develop and update SOPs.
Advise researchers on genetically modified mouse breeding and research procedures.
Ensure compliance with Animal Welfare Act, university directives, and process standards.
Contribute to building renovation projects.
Support the ECLAM residency program and internal training initiatives.
Requirements
Doctorate in veterinary medicine with specialization in laboratory animal medicine (ECLAM/ACLAM diploma or eligibility).
Experience in breeding genetically modified models; experience with fish or zebrafish is a plus.
Proven management and leadership skills in complex structures.
Team-oriented, goal-driven, with excellent communication skills.
Fluent in English;
German language skills are advantageous.
