The Position

The Resources Management Fisheries Technician supports the shíshálh Nation’s efforts to steward and protect its traditional lands and waters (swiya). You will assist with environmental monitoring, data collection and protecting natural resources. This role helps ensure land and resource use aligns with shíshálh values, title and rights, and long-term sustainability goals.

The Candidate:

Field Work and Monitoring

Conduct environmental fieldwork, including water sampling, fish sampling, fish counts, wildlife surveys, vegetation inventories and habitat assessments.

Monitor compliance with environmental and land use regulations on shíshálh swiya.

Document and report disturbances or unauthorized activity on the land.

Incorporating the shishalh Nation’s Traditional Ecological Knowledge

Work with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to document and incorporate Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into program design and review.

Data Management and Reporting

Collect, organize, and report on environmental and resource data.

Prepare technical reports, maps, and summaries to inform decision-making.

Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position as required and requested.

Qualifications,

Skills and Abilities

:

Outdoor experience, particularly fisheries-related

Experience and/or training in fish sampling, water quality monitoring and habitat restoration

Experience in field data collection, GPS use, and technical reporting.

Strong organizational and communication skills.

Current small craft operators’ licence and first aid training certifications would be considered an asset.

Ability to work independently and in a team, including in remote field conditions.

Knowledge of shíshálh swiya and cultural protocols.

Experience working with Indigenous communities or in Indigenous-led projects.

Primarily field-based work, often in diverse weather and terrain.

Periodic evening or weekend work may be required for fieldwork.

Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.

A clean Criminal Record Check.
