The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 (Stikine River Coded Wire Tag Project Crew Lead) located in Wrangell!
What you will be doing:
Under the supervision of a biologist, this position serves as a field crew leader for the Stikine River Salmon Stock Assessment projects assisting in smolt coded wire tagging and drift gillnet sampling of returning Chinook and sockeye salmon. The person in this position will lead crews in capturing both juvenile and adult salmon, collecting data, and will tag and safely release fish.
The incumbent will train crew members in sampling andsafety protocols, as well as delegate daily camp maintenance, and communicate daily with project leaders.

This position assists with work supporting the Pacific salmon treaty stock assessment program on the Stikine River, to assess and provide information to manage salmon stocks cooperatively with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Tahltan First Nation.

The working conditions you can expect:
Field camps are along the river shore in the Stikine River valley, set in the remote Southeast Alaska Coastal Mountain Range, near Wrangell. Staff work on the river in open boats, capturing wild salmon, collecting and recording data.
Travel in open skiffs on salt water and on rivers will be required daily.
Travel in small aircraft may also occur.
This position will require travel into Canada.
This position will require working in inclement weather and conditions where biting insects may be present.
This position will require the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Experience in aleadershipposition in any setting, including ensuring crew safety.
Experience living and working in remote field camps, in tight quarters, for extended periods of time.
Knowledge and experience with field camp installation, maintenance, repair and removal and operating and maintaining propeller and jet-driven skiffs in a river setting.
Knowledge and experience identifying and sampling both adult and juvenile salmon and gathering and entering related biological data.
