Position: Field Biologist (On-Call)
Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee‑owned environmental consulting firm that plans, designs, permits, mitigates, and restores projects across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the southeastern U.S.
This is a variable part‑time (on‑call) field biologist role with 0‑5 years of experience. Preference is given to candidates with 1+ years of professional experience. The role is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Sacramento‑San Joaquin River Delta, Central Valley, or within 3 hours of these areas. Qualified candidates must be willing and able to travel as needed, with the greatest demand for on‑call services in late summer through fall and periodic work throughout the rest of the year.
Additional work may be requested beyond this period.
Who You Are
- Minimum of two years of professional experience performing natural resource evaluations, technical studies, and analyses.
- Previous construction monitoring experience required.
- Ability to perform all aspects of biological monitoring on small to large, complex construction projects, including potential night and/or weekend work.
- Familiarity with wildlife and vegetation species in California Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area.
- Experience surveying and monitoring California nesting birds.
- Direct experience surveying, handling, and monitoring species such as San Joaquin kit fox, California tiger salamander, California red‑legged frog, northwestern pond turtle, San Francisco garter snake, giant garter snake, California black rail, western burrowing owl, western spadefoot, vernal pool brachiopods, Swainson’s hawk and other nesting birds, Crotch’s bumble bee, and bats (if applicable).
- Ability to walk long distances carrying a backpack and lift at least 50 pounds.
- Confidence working outdoors in remote, rural, and urban settings, in all types of weather, uneven or steep terrain, agricultural or vegetated environments, and along stream banks.
What You Will Do for ESA
- Perform biological compliance monitoring and reporting at active construction sites to ensure conformance with environmental/permit requirements.
- Conduct special‑status species surveys and nesting bird surveys.
- Identify and, when agency‑approved, relocate sensitive species.
- Communicate effectively with senior ESA staff, construction crews, project personnel, and project management staff.
- Take initiative and contribute to a respectful, feedback‑driven team culture.
- Maintain daily written monitoring and inspection logs, utilizing electronic data collection tools such as Fulcrum and Trello.
- Enter data into an online GIS mapping application (e.g., Fieldmaps, Collector, Survey
123). - Deliver worker environmental awareness training to on‑site staff.
- Obtain a valid driver’s license and maintain own transportation to project sites.
- Possess a smartphone with sufficient data plan for on‑site data collection.
- Comply with all safety requirements and policies.
- Lift up to 40 pounds (and at least 50 pounds as required).
- Perform other ad hoc tasks as needed.
- Provide proof of vaccination status or an approved exemption in accordance with ESA’s vaccination policy.
Compensation & Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.34 – $38.56 USD per hour. Employees are eligible for ESA’s sick leave program. Depending on eligibility, employees may also participate in an employee stock ownership program and a tax‑deferred 401(k) plan.
