The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa is a non-profit organization and home to more than 2,800 animals representing nearly 240 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research and recreation.
Position
Purpose
Under supervision, performs a variety of tasks related to horticulture, hospitality, and maintenance operations.
Essential Functions

On the horticulture side, duties include, but are not limited to:
Tasks related to all aspects of horticulture maintenance: grass mowing, weed-eating, leaf raking, trimming, pruning, tree removal, turf maintenance, etc.
Perform maintenance (preventative and repairs) on horticulture equipment
Provides general labor as directed
Supervises seasonal staff, volunteers, and volunteer groups that work in the horticulture department. Examples of volunteer functions include planting and maintenance of flower gardens, clean-up of leaves and trash on grounds, and occasional light maintenance duties.
Assist in emergency situations as needed (guest or staff illness, weather, etc.)
On the hospitality side, duties include, but are not limited to:
Emptying trash cans
Cleaning restrooms, primarily in the off season
Restocking restrooms
Cleaning up messes made by guests, including vomit, bodily fluids, etc.
Set-up and clean up for events
Keeping the zoo grounds clean
On the maintenance side, duties include, but are not limited to:
General maintenance (preventative and repairs) of systems and buildings at the zoo as directed
This may include, but is not limited to:
Electric
Plumbing
Carpentry
Metalwork
Vehicles
Work closely with Animal Care, Special Events, Education, and Office staff to help ensure smooth operations at the zoo
Snow and ice removal (on call) – maintain the safety of the zoo grounds, walkways, parking lots, and driveways during inclement weather if needed
