Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures by preparing equipment, monitoring patient status, and providing skilled technical support.
  • Safely and humanely restrain and handle patients to ensure the safety of pets, clients, and staff.
  • Collect and process laboratory samples including blood, urine, and fecal specimens, and perform in-house diagnostic testing.
  • Maintain aseptic technique during procedures including IV catheter placement, wound care, and sample collection.
  • Monitor anesthesia and provide nursing care to surgical and hospitalized patients.
  • Assist with dental procedures, including prophylaxis, polishing, charting, and dental radiography.
  • Obtain high-quality diagnostic radiographs and operate imaging equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Provide compassionate care to hospitalized patients, including feeding, walking, changing bedding, and monitoring appetite, behavior, and comfort.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and communicate effectively with doctors and team members regarding patient status.
  • Educate clients on preventive care, medications, and discharge instructions to promote long-term patient health.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with OSHA and AAHA standards.

Skills

  • Proficiency in venipuncture, IV catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, radiography, and laboratory procedures.
  • Strong animal restraint and handling skills with the ability to safely work with dogs and cats of all sizes and temperaments.
  • Working knowledge of veterinary terminology, anatomy, physiology, and common medical conditions.
  • Experience collecting and processing diagnostic samples including blood, urine, and fecal specimens.
  • Familiarity with dental procedures, including prophylaxis, charting, and dental radiography.
  • Ability to accurately calculate medication dosages and follow treatment protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate medical records.
  • Excellent communication and client service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and remain organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with veterinary practice management software and electronic medical records preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and proper infection control procedures.
  • Dependable, professional, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT/CVT/RVT) preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of veterinary technician or veterinary assistant experience preferred.
