EXPERIENCED VETERINARY ASSISTANT

Heartland Veterinary Services is seeking a dependable, energetic, and experienced veterinary assistant to join our team. This is a hands-on clinical position for someone who is ready to assist our veterinarians with appointments, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, diagnostics, treatments, and patient care.

Our practice cares for a diverse patient population, including companion animals and equine patients. The ideal candidate is compassionate, proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a busy veterinary environment. This person should communicate well, remain calm under pressure, and enjoy working collaboratively with doctors and other team members.

We enjoy supporting students and helping them grow within veterinary medicine. However, this particular position requires a consistent, stable work schedule so our team can maintain continuity and provide the best possible care to our patients and clients.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians during appointments, treatments, surgical procedures, and dental procedures
  • Obtain patient histories and record temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, and other relevant information
  • Safely handle and restrain dogs, cats, equine patients, and other animals using appropriate low-stress techniques
  • Prepare patients, equipment, and surgical areas for procedures
  • Assist with anesthesia administration and monitor patients during procedures and recovery under veterinary supervision
  • Place IV catheters, collect blood and other diagnostic samples, administer medications, and provide fluid therapy as directed
  • Assist with radiographs and in-house laboratory procedures, including sample preparation and basic diagnostic testing
  • Monitor hospitalized and recovering patients and promptly communicate changes or concerns to the medical team
  • Accurately document treatments, medications, laboratory results, and patient updates in the medical record
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients regarding approved care instructions and follow-up recommendations
  • Clean, disinfect, sterilize, and restock exam rooms, treatment areas, surgical equipment, kennels, and cages
  • Follow hospital safety, infection-control, and PPE protocols
  • Assist with appointment scheduling, telephone communication, and other front-desk responsibilities when needed
  • Work collaboratively with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, and client-service team members
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, efficient, and positive hospital environment

Qualifications & Skills

  • Previous veterinary assistant experience is required; two or more years is preferred
  • Experience assisting with anesthesia and surgery is strongly preferred
  • Strong animal-handling and restraint skills
  • Familiarity with IV catheter placement, blood collection, medication administration, laboratory procedures, and patient monitoring
  • Working knowledge of veterinary terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, and animal behavior
  • Ability to recognize changes in a patient’s condition and promptly communicate concerns
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and client-service skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and willing to assist wherever needed
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and remain active for extended periods
  • Ability to safely lift and carry animals, with assistance provided for animals weighing more than 40 pounds
  • Comfort working around animal hair, odors, bodily fluids, feces, noise, and cleaning products
  • Understanding that veterinary work may involve exposure to bites, scratches, infectious diseases, and emotionally difficult situations
  • Availability to maintain a consistent and dependable work schedule
