About This Role
Agrifood DIL and Resource Center—in partnership with an international development organization—is recruiting a Deputy Project Director for a proposed multi-year agricultural development program focused on strengthening the ginger and sesame value chains across Nigeria. This Abuja-based senior leadership position involves strategic program oversight, private-sector partnership building, commercial strategy design, and governance for a multi-state market systems development (MSD) project.
- Location: Abuja, Nigeria (With periodic field travel to Kaduna, Jigawa, Benue, and Plateau States)
- Experience Required: Minimum 12 years of progressive leadership in large-scale agricultural or private-sector development programs

Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Oversight & Performance: Monitor project KPIs (job creation, youth entrepreneurship, private-sector investment, and climate-smart agriculture), review progress reports, and advise senior management on risk mitigation and adaptive strategy.
- Commercial Strategy & Partnerships: Build relationships with agribusinesses, food processors, exporters, financial institutions, and input suppliers to expand market linkage and secure private investment.
- Governance & Quality Assurance: Ensure implementation quality across target states (Kaduna, Jigawa, Benue, Plateau), maintain strict compliance with donor requirements, and champion evidence-based learning.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Assist the Project Director in high-level engagements with government ministries, private-sector leaders, and donor representatives.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Master’s Degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Development Studies, Business Administration (MBA), Economics, Project Management, or a related field.
- Experience: 12+ years of leadership experience in multi-state agricultural, market systems development (MSD/M4P), enterprise development, or donor-funded economic growth programs.
- Core Competencies:
- Proven track record in high-level stakeholder management, negotiation, and contract delivery.
- Deep knowledge of Nigerian agricultural value chains (specifically ginger and sesame), climate-smart practices, and last-mile service delivery.
- Strong mastery of donor compliance, risk management, and adaptive program management.
- Preferred: Experience starting up or scaling complex agricultural initiatives, and formal professional project management certifications.
