Conservation Crew Leader – Backcountry Leadership Program Jobs in Boise, Idaho, USA at Nwyouthcorps

Position: Conservation Crew Leader – Backcountry Leadership Program (Boise, ID)

BACKCOUNTRY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM – CREW LEADER

Location: Based out of Boise,  local housing is not needed as crews camp together onsite for their entire session. Project locations will include the Frank Church Wilderness and Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Position Overview:

Connect young people with nature

Impact the lives of youth

Teach job-skills and education lessons

Accomplish meaningful service projects

We have current leadership openings for our Backcountry Leadership program. Our camping crews are fully immersive residential programs for youth (16-19 years old). Crew leaders oversee field operations and provide a meaningful experience for our participants and deliver conservation work expectations set by our partners.

The Backcountry Leadership Program (BLP) provides crew members with additional leadership skills and opportunities. As a part of the BLP team, you will hike deep into secluded wilderness areas and work on intense, challenging, and technical projects. Here the landscape is more pristine, the laughter more bountiful, the expectations higher, and life fuller than any place you may have ever been.

BLP members will be working in the Frank Church Wilderness, including being flown in to one or two projects on small planes to Little Creek Guard Station in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Leaders must be comfortable with flying!

Idaho Conservation Corps leaders perform many roles and are the key to our program’s success. They understand that being a leader is much more than being a boss. They have the drive, commitment, and mental toughness to carry them through the unexpected challenges that arise at the most inopportune of times; a remote location with bad weather, in the middle of trying to complete a mile of new trail, finish a bridge, or eradicate an invasive species.

The position is multi-faceted and demanding, but with opportunity for enormous rewards. Successful leaders demonstrate high standards, good sense, excellent judgment, and the desire to devote themselves to the crew and program alike. The leader position requires physical aptitude, mental fortitude, and a high level of comfort in the outdoors.

TRAINING: ICC offers exceptional training including USDA equivalent chainsaw training.

COMPENSATION: $130 daily; $135 returner or WFR/WEMT; $140 returner and WFR/WEMT.

At least 21 years old

Current Wilderness First Aid (or higher) and CPR certification or willingness to obtain prior to employment start date

Recreational/professional outdoor experience, accustomed to living for periods of time without modern conveniences

Ability to lift and/or move up to 70 pounds
