Vacant Position: Compliance Officer:
The Compliance Officer is a full-time, on-site role based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This role is responsible for monitoring and managing compliance with applicable financial, regulatory, and data protection requirements that affect Chapa’s operations. Day-to-day tasks include developing and updating compliance policies and procedures, conducting internal audits and risk assessments, and reviewing business processes and products for regulatory adherence. The Compliance Officer will work closely with legal, finance, operations, and product teams to ensure that new features, partnerships, and customer workflows meet regulatory standards. The role also involves preparing compliance reports, coordinating with regulators and external auditors, delivering staff training on compliance topics, and advising leadership on emerging regulatory changes in the fintech and payments space.
Key responsibilities:
AML/CFT and KYC program management
· Develop, maintain, and periodically review AML/CFT and KYC policies, procedures, and controls in line with local and applicable international standards.
· Oversee the implementation of the customer due diligence (CDD) and enhanced due diligence (EDD) framework, including risk rating methodologies and periodic reviews.
· Ensure effective sanctions and PEP screening processes, including alert triage, investigation, and escalation in line with regulatory requirements. Transaction monitoring and suspicious activity management
· Oversee or support transaction monitoring systems and rules, ensuring they are calibrated to the institution’s risk profile and regulatory expectations.
· Review and approve suspicious activity alerts and ensure timely preparation and submission of internal suspicious transaction reports (STRs) and external reports to the relevant Financial Intelligence Unit.
Regulatory liaison and reporting
· Act as a primary point of contact for regulators on AML/CFT and KYC matters, including responding to information requests and participating in examinations or inspections.
· Prepare and submit required regulatory reports, returns, and notifications accurately and on time.
Risk assessment and governance
· Contribute to the institution’s AML/CFT risk assessment and ensure risks are appropriately mitigated and documented.
Training and awareness
· Design and deliver AML/CFT and KYC training programs for staff, including onboarding and periodic refresher training.
· Provide day‑to‑day guidance to business and operations teams on compliance requirements, red flags, and escalations.
Internal controls and audits
· Monitor the effectiveness of internal controls related to financial crime compliance and recommend enhancements where gaps are identified.
· Support internal and external audits and regulatory inspections, including implementing agreed remediation actions.
Qualifications & Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, or related field.
· 2 Years’ experience in Compliance Management and Regulatory Compliance, with the ability to design, implement, and maintain effective compliance frameworks.
· Excellent Communication skills, including the ability to convey complex regulatory information clearly to diverse stakeholders and prepare accurate reports and documentation.
· Proven experience in financial services, fintech, banking, or a related regulated industry, ideally in a compliance, risk, legal, or audit function.
· Basic understanding of AML/CFT, KYC/CDD/EDD, sanctions, and PEP screening concepts.
