Clinical Nurse Specialist – Surgery

Job Description

The Clinical Nurse Specialist Surgery is an advanced practice leadership role responsible for driving excellence in surgical nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, research utilization, and system level improvement. Operating at a level above Senior Clinical Nurse Instructor. The CNS partners closely with surgical IPU’s leadership and multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes, strengthen evidence based practice, and advance the quality and safety agenda across all surgical services.

Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for surgical nursing practice across perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative care areas.
  • Lead complex clinical decision-making for high-risk and high-acuity surgical patients.
  • Conduct advanced clinical rounds with a consultative focus, guiding teams on best practices and complex case management.
  • Act as a clinical leader and role model promoting adherence to evidence based surgical standards and ethical practice.

Capacity Building

  • Provide strategic oversight to surgical nursing education programs rather than direct routine teaching.
  • Mentor Clinical Nurse Instructor and Senior Clinical Instructors and nurse educators in advanced clinical teaching and evaluation methodologies. 
  • Lead development of advanced competency frameworks for surgical nurses.
  • Support succession planning and professional advancement within surgical nursing.

Outcomes Improvement

  • Lead and evaluate quality improvement initiatives focused on surgical outcomes, patient safety, infection prevention, and enhanced recovery pathways.
  • Analyze trends in surgical KPIs, adverse events and near miss data to design system level improvement strategies. 
  • Collaborate with quality, risk management, and infection control teams to ensure sustained compliance with international standards. 
  • Promote evidence based initiatives that improve surgical length of stay, complication rates, and patient experience.

Policy and Governance

  • Lead development, review, and implementation of surgical nursing policies, clinical pathways, SOP’s and care bundles.
  • Ensure surgical nursing practice aligns with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements and organizational strategy.
  • Provide expert nursing input into organizational committees, surgical councils, and clinical governance forums.

Evidence Based Practice and Innovation

  • Promote integration of current guidelines, and innovations into surgical nursing practice. 
  • Support nursing led audits, and evidence based practice projects within surgical services.
  • Evaluate and guide adoption of new technologies, techniques, and care models relevant to surgical nursing.

Professional Development 

  • Maintain expert level clinical knowledge in surgical nursing and advanced practice.
  • Represent nursing leadership in interdisciplinary and strategic forums.
  • Coach, influence, and inspire a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform additional leadership responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.

 

Experience

Minimum 10-13 years of progressive clinical experience in a tertiary care hospital, with at least five years in complex surgical care settings.

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
