About our Department:
All nine City-maintained cemeteries are located within the city limits. Only four have active burials:
Maple Hill, Glenwood, Northside and Brandontown. The City sells plots for the Maple Hill Cemetery. The City’s cemeteries function not only as historic landmarks but also educational tools in educating Huntsville’s children.
Cemetery Grounds Specialist
Position Overview:
This is skilled work involving the preparation for funeral services and maintaining the grounds for the numerous cemeteries within the Cemetery Department. The incumbent performs manual laboring tasks as it relates to the maintenance of all aspects of cemeteries under varying weather conditions. Work involves opening and closing graves, assisting with setting markers, utilizing maps to locate grave sites, layout and excavate graves following interment verification, as well as installing liners and refilling grave sites after funeral services.
Work also involves leading in the operation of heavy equipment at various cemetery sites and leading the crew in carrying out a variety of landscaping tasks. Work consists of leading other skilled and unskilled laborers in various assigned projects.
Qualifications and Necessary
Special Requirements
:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of
Education
or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency is desired with some equipment training experience in the operation of a mini excavator, tractor, backhoe, zero turn mower, blower, chainsaw, weed eater, push mover, metal detector, trimmer, or similar heavy equipment, or any equivalent combination of
education
, training and experience.
Valid Driver’s License
A valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B must be obtained within one year of hire or
promotion
.
Must successfully pass the Blasting Training Certification test within two years of hire or
promotion
.
