Base pay range is calculated by position title, and experience. It is determined within the departmental budget. Changes to the range are approved by the CEO.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Our Carson City Veterinarian plays an important role in advancing Nevada Humane Society’s mission.
As a Carson City Veterinarian, you play a vital role in advancing Nevada Humane Society’s mission to care for pets, find them loving homes, and save lives. Your leadership helps drive our values forward by providing leadership for the clinic and ensuring regulatory compliance relating to the practice of veterinary medicine. This position works closely with the Carson City Clinic Manager and Medical Director to ensure best practices and oversee the Carson City clinic operations and public services. This position is estimated to spend 50% of their time with public services, 40% of their time with NHS owned animals, and 10% of their time with administrative tasks. The Carson City Veterinarian is also responsible for creating an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine is delivered to all patients under the care of the Nevada Humane Society-Carson City. In this role, you also partner with authorized personnel to make thoughtful employment decisions that align with our organizational goals—ensuring we remain compliant with policies, procedures, and employment laws while fostering a positive, mission-aligned workplace.
Essential Responsibilities
Position-Specific Responsibilities
- Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and staffing levels for clinic staff, including drafting job descriptions, interviewing, candidate selection, and employment action recommendations.
- Manage employee performance for direct reports, including evaluations, coaching, disciplinary actions, development planning, time report approvals, orientation, training, and ongoing instruction.
- Effectively resolve employee relations issues and ensure compliance with employment laws, organizational policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Provide direct supervision of the Carson Clinic Manager, including performance management, staff development, and operational oversight.
- Oversee and perform Veterinary medicine cases for public services that include but are not limited to, vaccinations, public spay/neuters, Owner Requested Euthanasia and Trap/Neuter, Return (TNR) for community owned animals.
- Oversee surgical and medical cases for all animals, under the care of Carson City Campus ensuring appropriate outcomes and delivery of high-quality care that meets or exceeds current standards.
- Partner with the Medical Director to evaluate, refine, and implement medical protocols aligned with NHSC operational needs, and to review and approve veterinarian scheduling for clinic coverage.
- Participate in the review and timely resolution of medically related complaints in collaboration with the Carson Clinic Manager.
- Ensure all DVMs and LVTs practicing in the NHSC clinic maintain current licensure and remain compliant with Nevada State Board requirements.
- Maintain an active DEA registration for NHSC and ensure controlled substances are stored, documented, and managed in full compliance with DEA regulations.
- Recommend and help maintain clinic inventory, including medications, equipment, and diagnostic tools, coordinating specific requests through the Medical Director.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented workplace culture that promotes high morale and strong working relationships among operations, doctors, and staff.
- Participate in regular meetings with senior leadership, providing recommendations, updates, and operational insight related to medical services and clinic performance.
- Contribute as an active member of the NHSC management team by collaborating on cross-functional programs, projects, and organizational initiatives.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities of the Associate Shelter Veterinarian role, as assigned.

Experience and Qualification Requirements
Position-Specific Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to manage employee onboarding, training, and performance evaluations.
- Experience handling employee relations issues and ensuring compliance with employment laws and organizational policies.
- Proven leadership in fostering team development and maintaining a positive work environment.
- DVM degree from an accredited university.
- Possession of or ability to procure within 30- days, a Nevada DVM state license, DEA license, NV Board of Pharmacy Dispensing license, NV Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substance license.
- Maintain an active DEA license for NHSC.

- Possession of a valid Driver’s License with valid registration and insurance for personal vehicles, essential for positions requiring driving.
- Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of animals and alignment with the mission of the Nevada Humane Society.
- Consistently treat animals with compassion and respect, both professionally and personally, and promote these values to others.
- Strict adherence to all local regulations concerning the ownership and care of personal animals.
- Comprehensive understanding of pet behavior and care, with the capability to handle various animals safely and responsibly.
- Maintaining a consistently positive and professional demeanor is essential.

Position-Specific Desired Experience
- Experience with high volume spay/neuter and dentistry.
- Experience with various soft tissue surgical procedures.
- Experience working in an animal shelter or TNR program.
