ABOUT US: The Schaumburg Park District is an award-winning public agency that provides its 80,000 residents with a wide variety of recreational facilities, programs, events, parks and open spaces. Volkening Heritage Farm is a living history museum where visitors can experience life on an authentic 1880s German farm, complete with cows, pigs, chickens, and much more!
LOCATION: Volkening Heritage Farm Visitor Center, 201 S. Plum Grove Road
JOB SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Supervisor of Farm Programs, the Farm Camp Specialist plans and leads farm-themed summer camps for children ages 5-13. They are responsible for facilitating daily educational and hands-on activities including farm animal care, gardening, and outdoor activities, all while keeping campers engaged and excited throughout the week. The Farm Camp Specialist should be comfortable around both large and small farm animals and will ensure the safety of campers during interactions with animals, equipment, and artifacts on site.
They will uphold a commitment to running a safe and effective camp program, maintaining clear and proactive communication with guardians before, during, and after camp as needed. The Farm Camp Specialist will be responsible for setting up and cleaning their camp space each day and will help maintain the organization of camp supplies – notifying the supervisor when additional materials are needed.
The Farm Camp Specialist is required to attend all relevant training sessions for the role and perform additional duties as assigned by their supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with children of all ages and prior experience leading youth in a camp or program setting. They should demonstrate reliability, maintain a positive and professional demeanor, and serve as a strong role model. Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong organizational abilities, are essential. Flexibility is key, as they must be able to adapt activities to accommodate group needs or changing weather conditions.
The position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A flexible schedule is preferred. Experience with farm skills and animals is a plus. CPR/AED certification is preferred, though training will be provided if not already certified.
SCHEDULING & PAY: This is a seasonal, part-time position paying $18.00/hour. Position begins mid-May and runs through mid-August. Schedule will vary by week. Heritage Farm camps run between the hours of 9:00am-4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Additional hours may be available when the fall programming season begins in September.
