JOB SUMMARY
The Canine Placement Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the placement of dogs into adoptive homes, foster homes and rescue organizations. This position involves coordinating the dog adoption program, managing rescue transfers, recruiting and supporting dog fosters, participating in dog adoption events, and taking an active role in the animal care and enrichment program to assess behavior and network dogs for placement. This position requires strong organizational skills, excellent communication, and the ability to prioritize and multi-task. The work schedule for this position is Tuesday – Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm. Holidays and after hours are required occasionally for special events or emergencies.
MAJOR DUTIES
Oversee and actively participates in the dog adoption process, including but not limited to matchmaking, counseling, and completing adoption paperwork.
Oversee the dog foster program, including but not limited to recruitment, training, orientation, and support for dogs in foster care.
Oversee the dog rescue transfer program, including but not limited to developing and maintaining relationships and coordinating transfers of dogs to approved rescue partners, and ensuring compliance with shelter policies and state requirements.
Assists Community Support Coordinators with the intake diversion program.
Identifies and pursues appropriate placement pathways for dogs best suited for adoption, rescue transfer, or foster care based on behavioral, medical, and organizational needs.
Performs behavior assessments on a routine basis.
Collaborate with the Feline Placement Coordinator when scheduling rescue transfers and animal transport.
Collaborates with the shelter veterinary team to schedule vaccine/prevention updates, rechecks, and spay/neuter and other appointments as needed for dogs in foster care.
Assists in the field as needed.
Maintains accurate records pertaining to adoptions, rescue transfers, and dogs in foster care.
Assists in the management of social media accounts and creates flyers and marketing materials.
Performs a variety of animal related duties, including but not limited to animal care and husbandry, enrichment including routine play groups, and transport.
Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Experience in animal sheltering or related fields
Knowledge of dog behavior, basic training and enrichment strategies.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to multi-task and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
Ability to safely interact with animals that have known/unknown behavior concerns; including but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, design software and other basic computer programs
Skill in animal handling, vaccine and medication administration, and animal transport.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Operations Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include North Carolina Department of Agriculture rules and regulations, county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
This position plays a critical role in reducing shelter length of stay and promoting positive outcomes for animals while maintaining high standards of care and customer service. The unique needs and circumstances of each animal contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to facilitate placement of dogs into adoptive and/or foster homes, with rescue partners and to assist with intake diversion. Successful performance contributes to the effective care and placement of animals.
CONTACTS
Contacts are co-workers, other county employees, volunteers, members of community organizations, in state and out of state rescue organizations, and members of the public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, motivate persons, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in an animal shelter setting while intermittently sitting, standing, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a moderate level of dexterity.
The work is typically performed in an office, animal shelter, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and potentially dangerous animals. The employee uses protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Dog training credentials preferred, but not required.
Ability to obtain a Certified Rabies Vaccinator Certification (within 6 months).
