Responsibilities

  • Conduct fatality monitoring for birds and bats beneath operating wind turbines.
  • Participate in carcass persistence and searcher efficiency trials.
  • Identify, age, and sex bird and bat species in the field and in‑hand.
  • Possibly conduct additional biological surveys.
  • Perform long hours of walking, sometimes in inclement conditions.
  • Operate compass, GPS, binoculars, range finders, and digital cameras.
  • Follow all safety protocols for WEST and wind‑energy facilities.
  • Use good judgment to stay safe and work efficiently.
  • Work 30–40 hours per week, with potential overtime.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or an equivalent field (undergraduates or enthusiastic workers encouraged to apply).
  • Preference given to candidates with field experience on wind farms.
  • Ability to travel an hour or more to and from sites and between survey locations.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and flexibility (including holidays and weekends).
  • Capacity to work independently and interact professionally with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners.
  • Equipment maintenance skills and adherence to detailed data‑collection protocol.
  • Strong bird identification skills for the regional species; ability to identify bats and use identification guides.
  • Skilled use of GPS units, topographic maps, compass, computers, and field equipment.
  • Experience with electronic data collection is a plus.
  • Organized, capable of data collection and management, including quality‑control measures.
  • Positive attitude, ability to follow instructions, and openness to guidance and constructive criticism.
  • Confidentiality regarding sensitive data.
  • Precise and thorough data collection.

Physical Requirements

  • Good physical shape; surveys conducted in extreme temperatures and conditions.
  • Walk or stand most of the workday in harsh conditions.
  • Lift 25 lb (or more) as needed.

Pre‑Employment Screening

Following an offer of employment, the candidate must successfully pass a background check, drug screening, and DMV records check that meet WEST’s minimum criteria for operating a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license is required, and candidates must meet all health and safety requirements.
