Role Summary:
We are seeking an adaptable and organized Avian Caretaker who is motivated by the ethical care of animals and will contribute to the growth of Neion’s research program. This role is based in NYC and involves hands-on care and handling of chickens and quail and collecting samples. This position reports to the Head of Avian Sciences and will require one weekend day shift, as part of a 5-day work schedule (Sunday to Thursday) to ensure continuity of care and study execution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Aviculture: Must be comfortable safely handlingchickens and quail in a research setting.Requires working with small flocks at all stages of development from egg collection, incubation and the successful hatching and growth of chicks and chickens
- Biosecurity: Must be comfortable working in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and observing standard operating protocols (SOPs) to protect avian health
- Culture of Care: Contribute to ensuring the health and environmental, nutritional and social enrichment of our flocks
- Record Keeping: Maintain timely and accurate animal and study records
- Regulatory Compliance: Help to ensure that research areas and records meet and exceed IACUC and USDA inspection requirements
- Supportive care and intervention: Productively communicate with veterinary and animal care staff and promptly report and respond to emergent conditions
Key Attributes and Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience providing hands-on animal care in a research, small animal clinical, farm or zoological setting is critical, including direct hands-on avian experience
- Prior experience incubating and hatching eggs and production of chicken across all life stages would be beneficial
- Undergraduate or an associate degree in animal, biological or veterinary technical sciences or related fields
- This position requires working in PPE for up to 3 hours at a time, and occasionally moving equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Attention to detail is important to ensure that biosecurity and care SOPs are followed
- Interest in learning new veterinary and laboratory techniques is valued at Neion
- Ability to operate with quiet confidence and competence, individually and as part of a team to promote a culture of care
- Communicate effectively with supervisor and Neion team members, as well as external veterinary and care staff
- Attuned to regulatory and procedural compliance to ensure that SOP’s are followed to promote animal welfare, biosecurity, and data integrity
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate information accurately, clearly, and concisely to ensure understanding.
- Ability to follow established work schedules, and record information accurately and in a timely manner
- Excellent judgment, time management, and observation skills to complete tasks in a timely manner, and ability to prioritize tasks to accomplish daily and weekly assigned duties.
Compensation: base salary is expected to be $60-70K depending on experience, with additional bonus compensation, equity compensation, and benefits including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, and a 401k plan.
