  • Duties/Pligte
  • Contributing to curriculum development and review, including the development of module content, assessment design, teaching and the evaluation of student learning in allocated undergraduate modules. These may include cereal science, food regulations, food chemistry and food analysis.
  • Planning and delivery of additional food science lectures at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as required by the Department.
  • Developing and implementing innovative teaching and learning approaches to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Consulting with students to discuss module content, clarify academic expectations and address academic concerns.
  • Preparing module content and assessment materials, including module outlines, lecture materials, assignments, assessments, and supporting learning resources.
  • Assessing and grading undergraduate students’ coursework, assignments, tests and examinations.
  • Supervision and co-supervision of master’s and doctoral (PhD) students.
  • Developing, maintaining and growing an active and productive research programme in a core Food Science-related discipline, aligned with the broader research focus of the Department.
  • Publishing research findings in relevant, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Identifying, securing and managing external research funding.
  • Developing and maintaining national and international research, professional and industry partnerships and networks.
  • Contributing to academic leadership, administration and service delivery at departmental and Faculty levels.
  • Participating in relevant community engagement and outreach activities aligned with Stellenbosch University¿s strategic objectives.
  • Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

    • PhD in food science, preferably with a strong specialisation in food chemistry, food biochemistry, food processing, food analysis or related discipline.
    • Demonstrated experience in teaching cereal science and food science related modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including theoretical and practical components, within a tertiary education context commensurate with the level of appointment.
    • Experience in supervising postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral levels, appropriate to the level of appointment.
    • A research record, demonstrated through relevant peer-reviewed publications appropriate to the level of appointment.
    • Evidence of the ability to identify and apply for external research funding, with a record of successful funding acquisition appropriate to the level of appointment.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish, manage and operate a food science research laboratory.
    • Demonstrated competence in applying analytical techniques relevant to the analysis of and quality evaluation of food products.
    • Proficiency in standard computer software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
    • Demonstrated competence in statistical and data analysis, including experimental design, analysis of variance, and multivariate data analysis.
  • Recommendation/Aanbeveling

    • A research focus that complements and strengthens the Department¿s existing or developing research profile.
    • Experience in industry-related or applied research.
    • Evidence of productive collaboration with industry, professional organisations or international research partners.
    • Language proficiency appropriate to a multilingual university environment.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently under time pressure.
    • Strong leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
    • An NRF-rating or equivalent recognised research standing, particularly for appointment at Associate Professor level.
