Under the direct supervision of the Special Assistant to the Law Division, the UN Volunteer will support the implementation of the Division’s mandate through a range of legal, administrative, and communication-related activities. Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in its role as Secretariat to the Montevideo Programme V by assisting with the organization of meetings, preparing background materials, and drafting meeting reports.
- Conducting legal research on a broad range of environmental law issues under the Montevideo Programme V framework, including environmental rule of law, human rights and the environment, rights of nature, environmental crime, and other emerging topics.
- Reviewing legal documents, instruments, and related materials in the field of environmental law and associated areas.
- Assisting the Special Assistant in delivering effective administrative support for the implementation of the Division’s mandate, including the enhancement of the Law Division’s digital tools and knowledge-management platforms.
- Supporting the Division’s communications activities by maintaining and improving UNEP’s website, InforMEA, and the UNEP Law and Environment Assistance Platform (UNEP-LEAP), as well as contributing to reporting requirements.
- Performing other duties as required to support the work of the Division.
REQUIREMENTS:
Languages
- English: Fluent (required)
- French: Working knowledge (desirable)
- Spanish: Working knowledge (desirable)
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Law, with a specialization in environmental law and governance.

Skills and Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in environmental law and governance.
- Demonstrated experience in legal research, analysis, and drafting within the field of environmental law and governance.
- Previous international work experience is an asset.
- Experience in communications, including digital or public outreach activities, is desirable.
