Located in the heart of Lincoln, Codman Community Farms (CCF) is a 501c3 non-profit founded in 1973 with the mission to operate a working farm that preserves Lincoln’s rural character by highlighting the importance of local farming and local food and invitingcommunity involvementthrough educational opportunities and events. The farm consists of an 18-acre farmstead complex with historic barns, outbuildings, farm housing, community garden plots, orchard, and fields as well as over 160 acres of privately owned or town-conserved farmland located throughout the towns of Lincoln and Concord.
We are located within 1000 feet of the commuter rail station.
Over its 45 years, CCF’s farm programs and community activities have gradually evolved and grown from a seasonal initiative to a year-round production farm that now raises 100% grass-fed Red Devon cattle, pasture-raised livestock including pigs, laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, and lambs as well as a thriving vegetable market garden. The farm sells directly to consumers through its self-serve Farm Store and produces value-added items in our on-site commercial kitchen.
Job Description
The Assistant Livestock Manager is responsible for the daily care of our pasture-raised livestock, including efficient management of laying hens, meat chickens, cattle, turkeys, pigs, and other minor livestock. The Assistant Livestock Manager will work closely with the Senior Manager of Farm Operations to oversee all animal care and pasture management.
Key Responsibilities:
Livestock and Pasture Management: 80%
Daily Animal Care:Ensure the health and welfare of all livestock by providing feed, water, and necessary care and management for laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cattle.
Pasture Rotation:
Manage the seasonal movement of animals through pastures, including the daily movement of all livestock and their associated infrastructure to ensure livestock and pasture health.
Fencing Management:Manage, maintain, repair, and move portable electric fencing.
Animal Health Monitoring:Observe and assess animals for signs of illness, injury, or stress, and administer treatments or report concerns as necessary.
Teamwork, Community &
Education:

Coordinate with the Senior Manager, Farm Operations, to oversee Farm Assistants’ daily workload.
Assist in training and mentoring staff, interns, and volunteers, fostering a culture of opencommunication, safety,teamwork, and learning.
Collaborate effectively with the Senior Manager, Farm Operations, and other team members (kitchen, store, market garden,educationstaff…) to meet overall CCF objectives.
Participate in educational activities related to CCF’s mission.
Farm Premises and Equipment: 15%
Safely operate farm equipment, including tractors and various implements, to distribute water, move coops, distribute feed, etc.
Help maintain fencing, water systems, mobile housing, and other infrastructure critical to livestock operations.
Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization.
Qualifications:
At least two years of experience in livestock care and farming, with a preference for pasture-based systems.
Proficiency in driving and operating tractors and other farm machinery.
Strong understanding of rotational grazing and pasture management principles.
Demonstrated self-motivation and excellent work ethic, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
