Since 2006, Second Chance SPCA has operated as Plano’s Premier No-Kill Animal Shelter. Our mission is to rescue at-risk cats and dogs from local municipal shelters. We supply them with needed medical care, food and shelter. Just as important, we provide all of our cats and dogs with the love and attention they deserve until they are placed into their “forever homes”. Everyone deserves a second chance. Over the last 18 years we’ve rescued over 6,200 dogs and cats that were slated for euthanasia at DFW municipal shelters and placed them with Forever Families.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director of Operations to join our team!
Our Assistant Director of Operations provides practical and administrative support to the Director of Operations in the planning, organization, and oversight of the animal shelter based on the objectives of the organization. They will assist the Director of Operations in the day-to-day shelter operations within the framework of policy and authority established by the Board of Directors. The Assistant Director of Operations must have the ability and requisite knowledge to perform the duties of the Director of Operations in their absence.
The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director are:
- Assists Director of Operations in the daily operation of the shelter in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Assists the Director of Operations with the intake and processing of animals, preparing adoption paperwork, and transporting animals to the vet.
- Assists Director of Operations with arranging vet appointments
- Insures that kennels are kept clean and animals are properly fed as scheduled.
- Monitors animal’s physical and behavioral health and notifies Director of Operations of any concerns.
- Initiates and replies to phone calls, emails and animal inquiries.
- Serves as secondary liaison with veterinarians and other professional organizations.
- Assists the Director of Operations with the supervision and instruction of personnel and ensures the well-being and humane treatment of animals; the maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds.
- Maintains proper inventory levels of cleaning supplies, medications, vaccines, preventatives and Hills Science Diet. Informs Director of Operations when reordering is necessary and upon approval of Director of Operations orders what is needed.
- Assists in training, coordination, and tracking hours of volunteers and community service volunteers.
- Coordinates and oversees group volunteering
- Performs basic technical procedures used in health evaluations, including proper immunization of animals, administering medications and providing animal grooming needs.
- Prepares monthly shift leader schedule and coordinates changes as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the workplace.
- Serve as shift leader and all of the duties including, all checklist items, managing volunteers, adoption screening and denying of adoptions when adoption criteria not met.
- Serves as on-call in the absence of the Director of Operations or Board Member
- Work is subject to frequent interruptions. Employee is subject to work two weekend days a month and holidays as needed. Employee may also work beyond normal scheduled hours. The Director of Operations based on the current needs of the shelter will set schedule.
- Qualified candidates will have experience working in some capacity with another shelter or vet office. Candidates will need to be flexible to work weekends and evenings as needed. Vet tech experience is a plus but not required. Our perfect candidate will have compassion and love for animals; however, they must also have the ability/desire to work with people in a professional and courteous manner. The Assistant will work/interact with volunteers, other team members, vet office staff and the general public each day throughout the day. It is crucial to have great people skills.
