Adoption Event Dog Handlers in La Jolla
Help dogs find their forever homes by volunteering at an adoption event with A Way Home for Dogs. The more hands they have, the more dogs can attend since they do not place dogs in enclosures at the event. They maintain a 1 dog per handler ratio, and all dogs are on a leash.
This event is at the La Jolla Open Aire Market (1st Sunday of the month). Volunteers will hold leashes for adoptable dogs, walk around the market and/or the vicinity. Chairs are provided for sitting under canopies.
Please note there will be downtime between setup and dog adoption support at the May event. After setting up, volunteers can walk the market and enjoy the venue until dogs are unloaded.
ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED TO STAY FOR THE ENTIRE EVENT. THERE IS ALSO A STRICT NO-PHONE OR HEADPHONE POLICY FOR SAFETY.
Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes
Attire: Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor conditions. Wear sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat.
Bring: Water, food if desired, and a treat pouch if you have one.
Physical Requirements: Ability to hold a dog leash with the loop around a wrist and grip the excess. Accommodations can be made for physical limitations—please inform the Opportunity Coordinator at least 24 hours in advance. Dogs of various strengths will be present, and their team can match dogs to your abilities. Vision and hearing are necessary due to dog behaviors. Chairs are available for those who cannot stand long periods.
The event space is wheelchair accessible, and a lap or sedentary dog can be brought for wheelchair users.
Waiver: All volunteers must complete the A Way Home for Dogs waiver before their first shift, including signing and providing contact details.
Weather: Events are rain or shine. In case of cancellation, volunteers will be notified via text and email. Ensure your contact info is current in your Hands On San Diego account.
Photos: Feel free to take and share photos on social media. If you prefer not to be photographed, inform the team.
Note: Download the Hands On Connect app to electronically sign the waiver and check in. Failure to sign in will result in automatic marking as absent at midnight on the day of the shift.
About A Way Home For Dogs
