Position: Animal Technician III (Multiple Openings)
Position Highlights
University Animal Care (UAC), at the University of Arizona, is seeking an Animal Technician III. The incumbent provides daily care for a variety of research animal species, including non‑human primates and animals exposed to hazardous materials, performs complex cage wash duties across multiple facilities, and maintains detailed documentation of all activities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform basic breeding colony tasks, such as separating breeders and weaning litters.
- Administer treatments to animals as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Assist in the training of new and existing employees in routine animal care procedures.
- Provide daily care to laboratory animal species such as rabbits, sheep, pigs, primates, and rodents—feeding, watering, health assessments, and cleaning of housing enclosures.
- Complete necessary documentation daily, including:
- Notify investigators of weans, arriving animals, animal deaths, etc.
- Notify Vet Services when sick animals require evaluation.
- Notify managers of room or rack issues, flooded cages, or other concerns.
- Fill out cage cards for weaned or split cages and submit strips for processing.
- Record information on bags of dead animals.
- Fill out Environmental Assessment sheets for each room, documenting humidity, temperature, lighting, AERFs submitted, deceased animals, cage changes, sanitation work, airflow checks, and notifications sent.
- Submit recharge information to the business office.
- Submit maintenance requests.
- Collect and prepare clean caging, feed, and enrichment for daily use.
- Clean and stock rooms, disinfect hoods, remove trash, and return dirty caging for processing.

- Effective time‑management skills.
- Basic computer skills.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Demands
- Perform work that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting, standing, and walking.
- Perform repetitive hand motions, such as changing cages.
- Be medically cleared to wear a respirator.
Minimum Qualifications
- High‑school diploma or equivalency required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- AALAS certification and/or prior laboratory animal experience.
