Under the direction of the Animal Care Shelter Supervisor, this Senior role provides oversight and humane care of animals in county animal facilities. Responsibilities include ensuring a high level of care for animals, compliance with department policies, training staff and volunteers, and assisting in disaster response for animal sheltering.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide daily leadership for Animal Care Technicians.
Provide outstanding care and necessary sustenance to a variety of animals; clean and disinfect housing areas; monitor animal health.
Assist in training staff and volunteers in animal husbandry, behavior, proper restraint, intake process, customer service, disaster response, and data entry.
Ensure compliance with policies and local/state laws.
Assist in developing and evaluating behavior modification and enrichment programs.
Handle and transport animals safely and humanely.
Provide high-quality service to the public and resource information as needed.
Assist in managing shelter inventory and equipment.
Assist with disaster response and emergency shelter operations.
Perform maintenance and custodial duties to ensure a clean and safe environment.
Participate in meetings and stay informed on animal welfare best practices.
Serve as a liaison between administration, staff, and volunteers.
Use Chameleon database and other tools to complete work and track information.
Provide assistance to other sections as needed.
In certain roles, responsibilities may involve performing euthanasia tasks.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED and one (1) year working in an animal sheltering or similar environment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Individuals performing euthanasia must hold a valid Euthanasia Technician license issued by the State of New Mexico.
Approval from the Director of Animal Care is required prior to performing euthanasia tasks.
PREFERENCE:
Experience working in a lead role in an animal-related capacity.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
All duties may be performed indoors or outdoors.
Duties are generally performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
Worker may be exposed to animals and various environmental conditions.
Shift work may be required, including extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS:
Equipment includes computer, telephone, animal handling equipment, and other necessary tools.
