Animal Care Technician II Jobs in Covington, USA at Tulane University

Performs routine and specialized duties associated with animal care, including feeding, medicating, cleaning, restraint and transportation. Maintains adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment. Observes animal behavior and conditions, collects specimens and provides technical assistance to research and veterinary personnel. Performs minor repairs and maintains animal housing facility. May train and supervise new technicians (ACT Trainee to ACT Level I). Weekend work and overtime hours are required.

May be designated as essential personnel during a storm or natural disaster. May need to work during closures; must provide accurate contact information and maintain communication with TNPRC.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have the ability to work with nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species without jeopardizing the health of said species.
  • TNPRC maintains biosafety level 3 facilities; work on diverse infectious agents that can cause serious disease in humans. Standard operating procedures and appropriate personal protective equipment must be followed. Depending on agent-specific risk assessments, individuals may be offered, or in some cases required to have vaccinations against the relevant agents.
  • When assigned to work in ABSL-3 containment areas, additional minimum requirements include:
  • Pass a US Department of Justice Security Risk Assessment for access to select biological agents and toxins.
  • Ability to perform job duties while wearing respiratory protection.
  • Must participate in drug and alcohol program and be in compliance with TNPRC drug and alcohol policy.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science.
  • Graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program.
  • One year of laboratory animal experience and certification as an AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT).
