POSITION SUMMARY

Animal Facilities Technician will assist the Animal Facilities manager conduct research and development and clinical research activities at the Iowa City Animal Facility. These activities will include embryo transfer activities, daily animal care, farrowing, genetic testing, clinical research activities, and delivery of CFTR animals to the University of Iowa. All animal care must be conducted in compliance with the requirements and expectations of USDA, AAALAC, FDA, NIH and other relevant agencies. In addition, this position will assist in surgical procedures, preparation and completion of documentation, and other farm activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide daily care for animals including feeding, cleaning, breeding, farrowing, weaning and observation.

Assist in surgical procedures including but not limited to embryo transfer.

Obtain necessary tissue and data to provide to internal and external research organizations

Assist veterinarians in communicating animal health concerns/needs

Maintain facilities

Maintain detailed records for animal treatment and observation and inventory

Work as a team to accomplish the tasks required for the day

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES – N/A

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Training & Education Preferred:

BS/BA in animal science or another technical field, or equivalent experience

Training in laboratory procedures and animal care guidelines (AWA and AAALAC)

Excellent communication skills

Prior Experience Preferred:

Neonatal piglet care

Adult pig care

STARTING PAY WILL BE BASED ON SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Technical Competencies:

Knowledge of AAALAC requirements and GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) procedures utilized in research involving animals

Ability to be on your feet a majority of working hours

Ability to lift, carry and reach for items at least 50 lbs

Ability to take multiple showers daily
